We Are the Egg People
(Homage to tempusfugit)
Every other Tuesday, I pick up a dozen organic, local, jumbo eggs from Marv and Lynn Fast, above, who own Red Barn Lavender. They're among my favorite vendors at the Bellingham Farmers Market, offering all sorts of wonderful lavender products, honey, fresh fruits and vegetables, and organic eggs.
From January through March, when the market is not in operation, they offer an egg CSA (community-supported agriculture) plan. I paid in advance for a certain number of cartons of jumbo eggs, and they bring mine -- and those of the other CSA participants -- to a shopping center parking lot not far from my home.
We always chat for a few minutes about their chickens, and what's going on at their farm during the winter.
Marv is also president of the Bellingham Farmers Market Board of Directors. He's one of those rare people who can communicate with people of all persuasions, and explain things clearly and without bias. I've worked with him on BFM committees and it's been a real pleasure.
It's a joy to buy eggs from Marv and Lynn, and to support local agriculture during the winter months.
(Phil and I had haircuts this afternoon, and I took a few photos in the neighborhood where that takes place. I thought these three businesses within a block or two of each other were interesting: Coconut Kenny's Pizza, complete with flaming tiki torches; Vis Seafoods, the best place in town for that specialty; and Violence Intervention Professionals, in that serene house.)
