RSL hall
This is the 'new' RSL hall (RSL = Returned Services League). The old hall was in the same spot - a delightful old residential cottage that had been converted into a meeting room and general gathering place, in a minimalist kind of way, by knocking out a few walls and merging several rooms into one. It was chock-a-block with flags, photos and military memorabilia of all kinds. Sadly, there was a fairly comprehensive fire some years ago and all was lost.
Since then, this small but well designed hall was built and the memorabilia has gradually been accumulating once again.
It's a sub-branch, so not like the big clubs, with bars and poker machines and so on. It's used for meetings, private parties, small functions, jumble sales and the like. It also houses the weekly Community Lunch, where anyone can come for a very cheap meal and some convivial company.
Tonight, the Rhododendron Festival Committee had a 'brainstorming' session to discuss ideas and priorities for this year's festival. It's the 60th consecutive Rhododendron Festival (quite an achievement for a small town) and we all want to make it a particularly memorable one.
Present were people from the Folk Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Streetscape Committee, the Friends of the Blackheath Pool, the Community Hall Committee, an old Festival Queen, the principal of the dancing school, interested townsfolk and members of the festival committee itself. (Some more arrived after this shot was taken.)
The secretary was kept very busy writing down all the ideas. We'll see how many come to fruition come November, when the festival is held (all month). Most of them, probably. That's what's good about this town, people don't just have great ideas, they also get up and make them happen.
