What are the nets for?

I know this picture wouldn't win me any prizes but I decided to go for it anyway as it was a sight that I haven't seen before in the garden. My gardening colleagues couldn't answer my question definitively as the nets were the brainchild of another colleague who wasn't in today. However, they were fairly confident that the nets were to prevent creatures from eating the fritillaries in this part of the garden. The possibilities for the creatures included rabbits, squirrels or birds. You'll no doubt be glad to hear that I won't lose much sleep through not knowing over the weekend.
