Handbags and Gladrags

Went to a small venue called 'The Cellars' in Eastney to see Mike D'Abo.
Mike was once the lead singer of sixties pop sensation 'Manfred Mann' from 1966-1969. In fact, he had a number one single with The Mighty Quinn.

As he launched into a fantastic rendition of 'Handbags and Gladrags', I did wonder if late-night revellers passing in the street realised that the guy belting out this world famous hit actually wrote it.

Interestingly, Mike later told the audience that he can't get anywhere near Rod Stewart these days with new material he has written. In his words, every attempt he makes in contacting the guy who made Handbags and Gladrags famous is greeted with a '50ft glass wall'.

Oh, and he co-wrote 'Build me up Buttercup'. He performed a soft acoustic version early in the evening, before thrashing out the crowd-pleasing Foundation's version at the end.

Great evening in an intimate venue with a very down-to-earth, talented and likeable performer.

....and very happy to sign Keeley's ticket at the end!
