manzanita flower

One of our early wildflowers. Manzanitas grow leaves at right angles to the sun. They absorb less heat, and lose less water in summer drought. They grow berries in the late summer and fall... they look like little apples, and that is the origin of the name, manzanita! The Ohlone people make a delicious cider from them.
