Ramblings and Mutterings

It's in our blood!

It's that time of the year again when all things rugby take over people's thoughts as the Six Nations starts. Of course it started yesterday but as Wales don't play until today, it only starts proper today.

Being born Welsh inevitably means that rugby is in your blood! Yes I know people will say that football is just, if not more popular than rugby but the mood of our nation is determined by the performance and results of our national rugby team. Take the recent rugby world cup, the whole of the country was with the team as we got to the semi finals and were cruelly denied a place in the final. Rugby gives us the chance to compete on a world stage and have a chance for glory.

Playing in the red shirt on the Millennium Stadium pitch is a dream most of us have. To show you how much it means my great uncle was picked in the probables side of the trial match prior to world war two, he was only about 17 or 18 years old and playing for Llanelli. In those days there were trial matches for the team, and to be picked in the probables meant he had a real shot at a Welsh cap. Eddie Waring, the famous BBC commentator, recommended him to Warrington rugby league side and he signed for them without any hesitation, as he loved league. His father, my great, great grandfather refused to speak to him for months because he missed out on his Welsh cap.

Rugby is so important to us, so let's settle down and watch the games begin!

Come on Cymru!
