Trompe l'oei
On the Saturday we went to see The Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. We saw (and photographed!) so many amazing things that day I've had a really hard time narrowing down which picture to use for my blip.
This is a ceiling in the Vatican Museum that has the most brilliant paintings that look like 3D mouldings. They really are so good it takes the eye a few moments to work out what's going on.
The highlight of the day was definitely the Sistine Chapel, which gave us the catch-phrase of the trip "NO PHOTO!" Apparently the Vatican let a Japanese company pay for the cleaning and restoration of the paintings so they now own the copyright to the images. If anyone tries to take a picture in the chapel the grumpy guards yell "NO PHOTO" and, allegedly, take great glee in throwing people out.
