A wee history lesson

The shilling (or /-) terminology for categorising beer strength originated in Scotland in the 19th C. Ales were invoiced depending on their strength and cask size in the currency of the day - a shilling being equivalent to 5p.

Belhaven ales then included 27/-, 36/-,54/-, 80/- and even six and seven guinea ales.

This 80/- ale is on sale today but, of course, I'm not going to drink this.

Just for the collection.
