Gosford House Mausoleum

As we had to deliver something to Musselburgh we continued to Gosford and took a walk round the grounds.

The mausoleum is grade A listed, a pyramid in shape with Doric columns on all four sides, (variously termed as Tuscan or Roman porticos). It was built around 1800, appearing on maps of 1799, for the 5th (or possibly the 7th) Earl of Wemyss.

I am particularly impressed by the description of the figures on the entrance gates: Two statues of Slaves with Flaying Knives... copied from the Flayer of Marsyas, Uffizzi, Florence. - a rather gruesome image even if symbolic.

In the frosty sunshine, with the drumming of woodpeckers, flapping of swans grooming on the icey lake and drifts of snowdrops in the woods, the walk was delightful.
