Memorial in the rain

War memorials always seem more poignant in the rain somehow. This is the memorial arch at Murrayfield Stadium. If it looks a little odd here, it was originally moved to Murrayfield from Inverleith after the SFU (as they were known then) relocated its national stadium across town. Thirty former Scottish rugby internationals were killed in the first world war, and this arch marks another sporting connection with the casualties in that conflict, like the Hearts memorial at Haymarket (currently removed to a safe place while the tram works carry on). The arch was erected at Inverleith in 1921 and then moved to Murrayfield in 1936, although Murrayfield had been in use since 1925, when Scotland beat England to win their first Grand Slam (although they didn't call it that back then).
