Apartheid - for those who suffered

This statue was erected by City of Edinburgh Council in honour of those who lost their lives and suffered greatly in the name of apartheid. It is situated at the entrance to Festival Square, and every time I see it I feel so very sad for those who had to live through such a deplorable era. I'm not sure why the Council chose to place it there as I think it is most ignored by passers by on their way to the office or tourists visiting the Sheraton.
