abstraction, the basis of understanding
Abstraction is the process of breaking down a problem into managable chunks or models. Instead of seeing a complex finished article, Abstraction allows you to look at just a simple part of the whole. Understanding the simple part and then how lots of simple things react together allow you to understand the complexity of the full piece without having to care about how the full thing works, just understand how each simple thing works and whole sets of complex behaviour can be understood and communicated.
The abstract painters from the 20th century painted a simple part of the world to better describe what they saw, this generally means that they use colour and form to express an emotion or present their representation of an object. Often these paintings were just numbered (e.g. Jackson Pollock's number 5) to further abstract the physical inspiration of the image to leave behind just the impression. Viewers are then invited to make their own impression from the image based on their experiences
What's that got to do with this photo? Dunno, but the colours sure are pretty!
