Picketston Cottage
I wanted to carry on the story of Elizabeth Mary from Tuesday but the next part illustrates the ravages of time wrought upon the Dunraven Estate of which little remains - Visitor Centre.
Here she is with the whole family on the Dunraven Estate where her father was Gamekeeper:
1871 British Census RG10 5419 13 Cwm Mawr Lodge
John Bishop Head M 47 Gamekeeper Gloucestershire Horsley
Alice Bishop Wife M 41 Glamorgan Cowbridge
John L Bishop Son U 17 Pupil teacher Gloucester Cromhall
Frances M Bishop Dau U 15 Dressmakers apprentice Gloucester Cromhall
Alice J Bishop Dau 13 Scholar Gloucester Cromhall
Elizabeth M Bishop Dau 11 " Gloucester Cromhall
Sidney A Bishop Son 9 " Glam Penmark
Herbert H Bishop Son 6 " Glam Coity
Edgar W G Bishop Son 3 Glam Coity
I went looking for Cwm Mawr Lodge and all I found were heaps of rubble.
It was only when I looked at an aerial photograph of the Dunraven Estate at the Heritage Coast Visitor Centre that I realised that one particular heap of rubble had been the site of the Lodge in question. I am not sure if it was demolished like the Castle or just fell down. In any case, I failed to photograph the right heap of rubble.
By all accounts, the Quin family did not spend much time at Dunraven as they
had a house in London and Estates in Ireland that were more attractive.
They must have been seriously rich and did not joke in the servant department as can be seen in 1881

So today I bring you the retirement home of John Bishop instead.
The cottage (formerly called Picketstone), built after 1881, was small and L-shaped (it was later extended) and has an outhouse with a baking oven and smoke room (seen on the left). Remember that John Bishop was a retired gamekeeper so this may have acted as a game larder too. There are plans afoot for further development of the adjacent land here.
There is a letter from John Bishop to his son Sidney, envelope postmarked JA 26 92 (26 January 1892), and addressed to:
Mr. S. Bishop
