Montechristi, Equador
Making Panama hats in the central plaza in Montechristi . Hang on you may say , aren't Panama hats made in ... Panama. No , I sneer with my superior knowledge though only recently gained, genuine Panamas are made here! Apparently when US President Teddy Roosevelt opened the Panama Canal in circa 1915 , he was given and then photographed wearing a hat described by the journalist when it appeared in the US papers, as a Panama Hat and the name stuck. Each hat can take anything from three days to several months and you can see it looks skilful and uncomfortable.
This is a very interesting country with a pretty vicious history and an average presidential term of around two years if you're lucky.
