More promise of new life
I love the unseenness of gardening as much as the actual displays of colour and flowers and all the rest of it. Today I planted out a load of bulbs (the seeds will have to wait as they are all to be planted in March or April), right now there's not much to see but I love that under the ground all sorts of things are going on, new growth, new life, and before long spring will be here and we can see the results of all that unseen activity underground. I put quite a few bulbs in pots (the harlequins and freesias) as they need to be lifted and stored in autumn, and as usual got such a kick out of the beautiful home-made compost I can use (another bit of unseen activity I could wax lyrical about for hours). Out here in the front garden I planted the bulbs which can be just left to get on with it and don't need lifting, a couple of agapanthus (the light brown soil marks the spot) and lots of crocosmia. I also planted out the small pot of forget-me-nots I managed to salvage from the back court from the Glasgow flat. I can't wait to see them all in all their glory in the summer.
I'm a bit embarrassed about the state of the grass, we've not done anything to it since we moved here in November and it shows, but in my defence it's always been too wet to mow. I'm still deciding what to do with it - I'm tempted to extend the beds a bit, put a few biggish shrubs in and gravel over the rest, but on the other hand the grass cuttings will be good for the compost. Still plenty of time to decide.
