A Collector of Oddities

Who's a pretty boy?

Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs

The Chaffinch is one of the earliest recorded British birds, turning up in an Anglo Saxon document from 685.

They often segregate themselves into single sex flocks over winter which has lead to their scientific name coelebs (unmarried) fringilla (finch).

I am convinced Chaffinches have accents according to where they come from because I have noticed that the final note they sing is different in different areas. The Chaffinch accent in Stockbridge is so noticably posh that it makes me laugh when I hear it.
