Barytes mine

A walk in the hills today, over a couple of snowy Corbetts (Meall Tairneachan and Farragon Hill) north of Aberfeldy. It was a funny old walk with some very tricky navigation. The cloud billowed around giving the odd view, but with our dodgy map, lack of attention to where we were going and the very hummocky terrain, we got 'disorientated'* at least a couple of times.

The hummocky hills are actually holding an extremely valuable mineral to the Scottish economy. They have the world's richest deposits of Barytes which is used in the North Sea oil industry. We managed to enter one of the mines and were surprised to feel how warm the air was emanating from the depths...
