your world can become very small when you're in hospital - I've been lucky enough only to be in hospital having babies till now. I didn't have any tv or radio and my husband sensibly only brought me the "fluffy "part of the newspaper to read, so I felt very insulated in my part of the ward.
I was determined to blip though - it is a bit obsessive isn't it? The staff didn't want to be photographed and I'm too vain for a self portrait at this stage, so the options were limited. The staff were very interested in why someone would bring their camera into hospital with them though!
