Cariad

As love is in the air and I won't be with fy nghariad tomorrow I thought I'd take a close up of her gift of a Welsh love spoon.

A Lovespoon is a wooden spoon decoratively carved that was traditionally presented as a gift of romantic intent. The spoon is normally decorated with symbols of love, and was intended to reflect the skill of the carver. Due to the intricate designs, lovespoons are no longer used as functioning spoons and are now decorative craft items.

The custom of giving a love spoon is unique to Wales and originated in the 17th century when lovers would offer intricately carved spoons bearing symbols of their love and feelings to their partners

The word Cariad to the Welsh has many meanings sweetheart, lover, darling or beloved.

The heart is a token of love or friendship
