Milford Sound

Milford Sound is part of the Fiord National Park and is 3million acres in size. It was designated a World Heritage area in 1986 because of its superlative natural features and exceptional beauty - oh boy - was it beautiful ! There is only one road in and out - steep and rugged with cool temperature rain forests, jungle dense with climbers, vines and ferns.Work on a tunnel to get to the sound took 26yrs to complete. It is the wettest part of N.Z. - 7-9metres of rainfall. We cruised up the fiord to the mouth of the Tasman Sea - weather was a bit overcast but did not detract from the stunning nature of a fiord - we now fancy a cruise to Norway ! We saw grey fur seals basking on the rocks and terns who feed on the mussels that live on the edge of the water. There are lots of legends about the fiord and the cascading waterfalls - one sprayed a fine mist - if ladies stayed under it for 1minute - it took 10 yrs off their age - I managed 10 secs - no change !!! A truly memorable day.
