Nickel-Brass Threepence
Today in 1971, after nearly 150 years of wrangling was the last day of the medieval currency system in the UK, with the introduction of decimal coins on 15 February 1971. I was a tiny baby at the time and have no recollection of the event, or indeed the currency that was being phased out.
A friend of mine from University was born on 14 Feb 1971 and was lucky to be called Philip not some variant of Valentinus. His parents even considered Decimara if he'd been born on the 15th..!
