The Living Years

You couldn't make this up

I know it's not at all romantic but this sums up my evening perfectly.

After 11 hours at school I came home to bake. I have officially decided that after 11 hours at school I shouldn't come home and bake. Unfortunately I had to so after 3 trips to the non stop (Note to self - make sure you have everything you need before you go for the first time). I'm sure the girl in there thought I had finally lost it.

I also I have to remember to check the labels of things not just the picture. I very nearly ruined the first cake by almost putting turmeric instead of ginger into my gingerbread cake. This also explains why some time ago I made a very odd tasting cake, I just thought ground ginger in Hungary was a funny colour! Turns out root ginger and root turmeric look very similar.

Ginger found, I continued with my cooking. After 2.5 years here there are some things I still can't get used to, one of which is milk in plastic bags. In my overworked grammar filled brain I put an open bag of milk on the table, unsurprisingly it fell over when I left the room for my third trip to the non stop. I returned to find my laptop sitting in a pool of milk, milk dripping down the wall, milk dripping on the power cable and milk all over the kitchen floor. Turns out 1 litre of milk is a lot. After panicking a bit, I sensibly unplugged the laptop and tried to dry my lap top with kitchen towel and a make up brush (to get the milk out of the cracks). I phoned L to vent my anger and frustration. Then I went to get the mop and bucket. Unfortunately when I cleaned the floor a couple of days ago, I had just cleaned the bath and didn't want to put the dirty bucket water in it so put it out on the balcony. You can see the result! After laughing hysterically and phoning L again I of course took a photo. So I defrosted my mop in the sink and did a quick job of cleaning up the kitchen.

I have semi successfully baked 4 different things tonight. Gingerbread cake, apple and walnut fairy cakes, almond slice and mini quiches. So I'm feeling quite pleased with myself after last nights laziness. Of course if I'd started yesterday I might have got a bit more sleep.

It wasn't a particularly romantic valentine's day. I!m feeling slightly resentful/jealous of L still being at uni, tonight. While I was baking for a school event tomorrow afternoon he has gone out drinking with a group of friends (most of which are girls). They've gone to a traffic light party and he assures me that his purple shirt will count as red, I'm not so sure! He did make me laugh when he called up later a bit drunk to tell me he was a bit drunk. Happy Valentine's baby!!

To make myself feel better I will say I had a great day. One of my students made me laugh as she has just learnt lots of pollution words and seemed to think that cars, bicycles and buses all cause air, water, soil, noise and light pollution. She was just proud of her new vocab but the idea of these dirty bicycles made me laugh.

I also had a slightly embarrassing and funny moment with another class. We were discussing their books for next year. In Hungary they take two optional classes in the final 2 years of school. These are called fakultacio or fak for short. One of the students asked about this and I said "oh fak, you'll need .....". In Hungarian a is pronounce o. The class started to giggle, and I realized what it sounded like.

Anyway I really need to go to sleep, there goes my early night routine. No doubt I'll be back tomorrow complaining about how tired I am and that my laptop and kitchen smell of gone off milk.
