CROSSING THE WHARFE
The New Bridge on Lower Brook Street
Plans were originally drawn up in 1899 for 'a modest toll bridge'. The Building was completed in 1904, mentioned on the iron shield on the bridge itself. A good while later, on the 2nd June 1906 was the official 'opening ceremony', performed by Mr Middlebrook who at the time was chairman of the District Council and manager of Ilkley Brewery Company. The opening ceremony included a crossing by the Third Lancashire Royal Volunteers who were on their way to their summer camp.
