St Martin-at-Oak

There are three medieval churches within a minute's walk of home. All are now redundant. One is used as a book store and the other two are in the market for new tenants.

St Martin's was a flourishing church in the late 19th century and a noted centre of evangelical religion. In recent years it has served as a night shelter for the homeless and ... artists' studios.
The church is dedicated in honour of St Martin, the fourth century Bishop of Tours, who is supposed to have cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar. The suffix refers to an oak tree that once stood in the churchyard and which, in the Middle Ages, housed an image of the Virgin Mary.
