The only light left

We live at the 'end of the line' in terms of power supply, and are susceptible to power failures. They usually happen when it's raining and very windy, but tonight it was just very, very cold.
We scrabbled round for candles, but for a little while, this was the only light we had: the coal-fired glas-fronted stove that supplies our central heating and hot water.
We went to bed by candle-light. Funny how your hand still reaches for the light switch, though.
