Latin vocab

This is one of my favourite family treasures. The book belonged to my great great grandfather who was born in 1794. His brothers also shared it judging from all the signatures. I just love the worn grubby feel about it. Some of the words they learnt are quite unusual compared with today's primary school English vocabulary: a Wale on the flesh after Whipping it - Vibex, icis, f.; the Turpentine tree - Terebinthus, i, f.; a gelded goat - Caper, ri, m.; a hangman or Jack Ketch - Carnifex, icis, m. There are of course the more usual nouns relating to parts of the body, household stuff, food, buildings, natural history etc.

We spent the morning sorting out what we had removed from the house in Devon. It actually rained too! The first time in weeks which will be good for the newly planted trees.
