Happy Birthday Justin Fashanu
19th February is Justin Fashanu's birthday and the International Day Opposing Homophobia in Football. Which is why I had a fun but freezing afternoon watching a a 5 a-side footie tournament at Carrow Park (next to NCFC) to celebrate the day.
Some info about homophobia in football, provided by organisers of today's event:
The first million pound black footballer and the first openly gay
player, Justin Fashanu was definately a trailblazer. However, whilst
his troubled life and tragic death is a reminder to us all of how
homophobia in sport (and everywhere) can ruin lives and destroy talent, we should also celebrate his achievements and his place in Norwich City folklore.
Recent high profile cases surrounding alleged racist hate crime
involving John Terry and Luis Siarez, the abuse of Norwich's own Tom
Adejemi at Anfield and the sacking of Lee Steele by Oxford City for a
homophobic tweet about Gareth Thomas mean that homophobia in sport is an even higher profile issue than ever in 2012. We can put pressure on the FA to increase its work on tackling homophobia and support the work of the Justin Campaign.
The pic shows a detail of the trophy that is awarded to the winning team, which they get to keep for one year.
Ps: I really don't see the attraction of watching 22 people fannying about with a football for 90 minutes ....
