Fire on the streets of Montevideo

Today we had a leisurely bus ride from Colonia to the magnificient capital of Uruguay - Montevideo.

We are really excited to be in Montevideo for 4 nights and are staying in the historical old quarter of town and will try and do a mix of exploration, fitness preparation and lounging by the beach.

After dropping off our bags we hit the pavement for a marathon walk through the streets of Barrio Sur and Palermo on our way to the leafy Parque Rodo. After a quick breather we turned around and went home via the beachside Ramblas path.

Suddenly in the distance Jo spotted some flames coming from underneath a stranded car which still had the family sitting inside. After screaming and making wild, hand gestures we urged them to abandon the vehicle and save themselves.

They did although the driver was a touch reluctant. Shortly after bypassers armed with fire hydrants and 2 police cars came to extinquish the blaze.

It was our good deed for the day so I thought I could then play journalist and take a picture to remember it by.
