And the winner is...
The Great Hall in Rochdale has magnificent stained glass windows, with full length portraits of all the Kings and Queens of England(plus, from 1603, Scotland) from William I in 1066 to the start of Victoria's reign. A particularly special section features these two - King Charles I (left) and Oliver Cromwell (right.) After the latter's Parliamentary forces won the Civil War, the former was decapitated. Cromwell then ruled the country, as Lord Protector. However, the monarchy was restored in 1660 by Charles II.
But who were the victors from this bloody encounter? The monarchy was suspended for just 11 years and now, 352 years later, thrives. But the country is now a Parliamentary democracy and the monarch is very much Constitutional and not an absolute ruler. So who "won?"
