Just one of a dozen thoughts for today... this was the first one in the morning while waiting for the traffic light. What is the word for it?

I checked the unknown word into my dictionary and the words 'mackerel sky' came up. The direct translation from my language is 'scaly clouds'... I just knew it couldn't be right... it's similar image though.
