a life of vicissitudes

By thinjoe

I know it's a cliche but...

I kind of had to take a photo of the eiffel tower today, I know it's a horribly clichéd thing but I've been thinking about it a lot of late. I had to give a 7 minute talk on the tower today and found out a whole load of bizarre info so I thought I'd share some with you all.

1. The eiffel tower is the same height as 100 elephants.(Thanks to Poppy and Pierre for this)
2. Adolf Hitler never got to ascend the tower when he occupied paris, The resistance had disabled the lifts.
3. The lift system for the lower two levels is the same system which was in place when it opened.
4. When it opened the tower wasn't quite finished. The night before workmen worked through the night to make sure the 1st and second floors were safe.
5. The original lift system to the top floor was a bit odd and required visitors to climb out the carriage half way and walk a thin gangplank to take another lift the second half., The view down was apparently breathtaking.
6. If you took the Eiffel TOwer apart and laid all the pieces of iron end to end, you would end up with a lot of really annoyed frenchmen.
7. Gustav Eiffel wasn't a trained engineer he was a chemist.
8. 200,000,000 people have been up the Eiffel Tower
9. A conman once managed to sell the eiffel tower for scrap.
10. Erika Eiffel married the tower in 2007, She is also having an affair with the Berlin Wall!

So there#s some facts for you, again sorry for the predictable post. I have to say I am loving using picasa to do basic photo edits and am quite pleased witht he vintage feel I ended up with on this.
