Can you eat 15 Selmas ?

A plate of Selmas sitting in the window of the 'konditori', on Mariatorget in the Södermalm district of Stockholm, where we had morning coffee today.

A Selma is cardamom-spiced wheat bun which has its top cut off and insides scooped out, and is then filled with a mix of the scooped-out bread crumbs, milk and almond paste, topped with whipped cream.

Traditionally, eaten on Shrove Tuesday but by the look of the bakeries there is not much fasting going in Stockholm during lent.

It seems King Adolf Frederick of Sweden died of digestion problems in February 1771 after eating 14 selmas in a bowl of milk. We only tasted one, although the dozen on this plate were tempting...

Ps: by coincidence Mariatorget where we ate our Selma used to be called Adolf Fredriks torg after the King who died eating too many of them :-)
