Of Carrots and Donkeys.
Launched today, the DEVO-Plus campaign group held out a precariously balanced carrot to lead what they might view as 'the donkey' of Scottish Independence.
With a focus on fiscal powers and the balancing of a tight economic budget under DEVO-Plus. Persuading the Scottish electorate to assist the Con-Dem coalition in retaining some semblance of dignity in the independence debate was clearly firstmost in the minds of the campaign delegates, not long after UK Prime Minister David Cameron visited Edinburgh to patronise the Scottish People.
Ex-Liberal Democrat MSP Jeremy Purves was introduced as Chairman of the group, which is hosted by Reform Scotland's Ben Thomson. Also presiding cheek to cheek were Tory Alex Fergusson MSP and Lib-Dem Tavish Scott MSP. Labour's Duncan McNeil, although mentioned as a supporter was unable to attend. Indeed, had he been present in the line-up then one might be misled of thinking that Labour and the Lib-Dems were finally cosying up all together with the Tories. More than likely McNeil's reasoning to give the launch a swerve. We will undoubtedly hear of his arguments in coming months, but will they really all be able to cosy up together?
I'm sure DEVO+'s on-going argument and debate will be a good one, but although I still feel that the reasoning towards the desire for Scottish Independence amongst the Scottish people is a concept which is yet to be grasped by groups such as Devo+.
As the slogan in their presentation says - it's about the principle, not the process. Strong words not fully backed up with examples.
