tales for the young

Friend G gave me this beautiful teeny tiny sixpence children's book called "Tales for the Young" as well as some good constructive advice.

Can see this being a source of a few blips. The content really is from another age (another book from Miss Edgeworth is advertised called "the grateful negro"??)

From the illustrations I'm thinking it's Victorian, 1860's? Sadly no date inside to confirm this suspicion. The author T.S. Arthur turned out to be a contemporary of Edgar Allen Poe and died in 1885. Poe considered him "uneducated and too fond of mere vulgarities to please a refined taste." but the wiki entry is fairer, "Arthur's ideas seem simplistic, even oppressive, today, but many readers in his time found him relevant, helpful, reassuring, and compelling"

So this is what counted as a crass comfort in the 19th Century folks

As for the advice.. still sounds pretty useful.
