Who knows what plant this is?

This plant has been growing in the garden for the last few years & I've mowed around it 'cus I quite like it. Today I noticed lots of these little purple flowers sprouting through... anyone know what it is?

Note to self: definitely too early in the year for going without shoes in the garden. Result = very muddy feet!
