Tafoni

Two and a half centuries of facing out onto the Bay of Biscay, exposed to salt weathering, has left a curious impression on the facade of the old Chapel of San Lorenzo, Gijon. Now an art gallery.

Pitted sandstone such as this is referred to as tafoni (so I just discovered).
