Why couldn't we all be little smiling plastic flowers standing in front of a window and looking towards the world? - Probably because we would notice that we are not alive and that we would become insanely depressed watching all the little ladybirds fliying around the gorgeos flowers and the powerful trees in the real live.

Maybe that why batteries stop working; the "flower" commits suicide.
