North Buckinghamshire

One of my favourite views, of north Bucks farmland, looking at Stowe Gardens - the estate designed by Capability Brown in the 18th C. The gardens are at the top of the picture, not the foreground, which is Radclive Manor and the church of St John the Evangelist. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=62571

Capability Brown was head gardener at Stowe and got married there.

You can't see much of the Gardens, so here is a description from a visitor, writing in 1735:

The Stowe gardens 'are esteemed the finest of their Kind in England; & are indeed most elegantly disposd, & beautifully diversifyed with Walks & Lawns, Canals & Grotto's, Waterfalls & various Buildings, such as Temples, Rotundas, Pyramids, Obelisks & Colonnades.'
An anonymous visitor, 1735

What you may also see is the evidence of my preoccupation at the time. I am standing at the top of the practice ground at Buckingham Golf Club, taking respite from the necessary drill of hitting golfballs at distant flags...
