White Box

There must be a point to this square;
It's been marked out and painted with care
It stands on the tube line
A mystical white sign;
A mysterious hand placed it there.

On the tube platform at Highbury and Islington station. There are examples of this all over the tube network; presumably it means something significant. Any ideas?
