Cruthches (Moral & Actual)
Spotted while out walking Apollo late at night.
Almost as prevalent as taco stands, are these little shrines to Jesus (and more often, it has to be said Mary).
It's sometimes strange being in a country that is as religious as I remember Ireland being when I was a kid. In fact, I see a lot of parallels between Mexico now and Ireland then.
Being of the born-again-atheist variety I have no time for organised religion, but at the same time I recognise that FAITH is no bad thing to have to help people endure the trials and tribulations of everyday life.
Religion can also act as a bond to keep people and communities together. Of course, it can also do much to keep people under the yolk of repressive and conservative thinking.
As Mexico prospers and modernises, I wonder if the power of the church will wane in the same way, as it has back in Ireland.
Who knows, who knows?
