Tree City U.S.A.
Glen Rock, New Jersey, U.S.A. is known for its beautiful trees. We have many Heritage Trees, which are over 100 years of age, and hold historical significance to the boro.
Lately, there has been a lot of action taken by the various tree loving organizations in town, to preserve as many trees as possible, and to require home owners to not only limit their tree removal, but to replace cut down trees with new ones to protect the tree canopy for future generations of Glen Rock residents.
This tree tag is present on all new plantings purchased through The Shade Tree Advisory Committee. It is a nice reminder that the home owners cared enough to replace a tree that fell during one of our horrific rainstorms Fall 2011, and a subtle message that we must protect our small town from pollution and the sun.
Last year, I got involved in helping a park out in West Hollywood, California save its trees from being bulldozed for an underground parking garage. I'd like to think my letters and support for the people who live near the park helped. Whatever the case, their park has been given a stay of execution - at least for now.
My town has its faults, but trees are what made Glen Rock a designated "Tree City,"
and we intend to keep that title. Perhaps WeHo should take notice. Not everything in New Jersey looks like the Jersey Shore.
After all, this is The Garden State.
