My design function analysis class that I inherited this semester includes, every second week or so, a design exercise that the first years need to complete and anyone else who is free can take part in.
This week was a response to a conversation we had as a class last week about spider webs. The challenge was to get a length of cord across an expanse of grass between two fixed points. The cord was as long as the distance between the two points. There was a concrete path around the patch of grass but the cord was short enough that you couldn't hang onto both ends and walk the cord around. Other key rules: No part of a participants body or clothing/anything they are wearing, or the cord is allowed to touch the grass. Any materials the students can find are available to them. Fastest solution wins.
This is Rob with his and Simon's solution. Very quick. Other solutions included extending the length of the cord with toi toi leaves and walking/climbing around the edge of the grass (worked very well), walking across the lawn on sheets of plastic (worked resonably well), and biffing a water bottle with cord tied to it across the lawn (didn't work so well).
