Portobello & Cockenzie......
.....never thought about how interesting these names are, but Portobello is thought to come from an 18th Century house known as Portobello House, named after Puerto Bello on the Isthmus of Panama; it's owner, George Hamilton, was present when Puerto Bello was captured.
Cokinnie as it is pronounced by real locals is drawn from a gaelic name from the bay of Kenneth.
I could seem them framed between the trees of Calton Hill and Arthur's Seat today whilst we sat chilling on the hill.
Meant to say that I met a real hero of mine yesterday. I've long admired the work of Portobello's Pete Standen. He was selling some of his work at the craft fair in the west end and I stumbled into him sitting having a quiet cuppa. A 30min conversation ensued about his work, which seemed to last 30 seconds, I enjoyed every moment. So glad to have met him.
