A Year in Phnom Penh

A woman's world

At first I found this scene ironic, taken on International Women's Day, with all the men sitting doing nothing while the women work around them. But then I realised it actually speaks loudly about what, increasingly, it means to be a woman.

Cambodia has a long way to go when it comes to the welfare of women, but all around, there are women taking their welfare in to their own hands, making careers for themselves, eking livings, taking the initiative. And while often their choices seem grim to those of us more spoilt by longer established women's rights, one can't help but take a lesson from their determination to quietly establish change in any way they can and to work within the often limited and limiting boundaries that surround them in Cambodian society.

Women will change the world!
