The Sound of the Country... in the Town
After hearing a sound that sort of resembled the "Predator" hunting sound (silly film with the Governor of California in it!) i searched the small park in Down town Gravesend and found this little beast hammering away at the tree .
By the state of the tree it looks like it has been hammering there for a while, and what a lot of noise for a tiny bird.
The little swine was nervous as hell though so i couldn't get closer , as my joints are not made for stealth or sitting patiently :(
Had to use the digital zoom to get close hence the not so sharp image .
Knowing it was a woodpecker I consulted my newly acquired "The Natural History of The British Isles" book ( £2.50 from a local charity shop) .
It is Dendrocopus major The Great Spotted Woodpecker .
I will wait for a day when my joints are ok and return me thinks :)
Me thinks spring has sprung ..yet again :)
