a day on the farm

Marble Quarry

This is the oldest marble quarry in the U.S., located in Dorset, VT. It was established in 1785, according to the plaque at its edge. Many of the homes and historic buildings in the area have lovely marble foundations or are completely constructed of marble. The water is very clear and somewhere between 20 and 30 feet deep. The marble steps on which I was standing to take this photo, are carved with the names of hundreds of lovestruck youths, pronouncing their undying affection for each other ..... or at least until next summer.

It's now privately owned and is a very popular swimming area in the summer. At your own risk, of course.
