world in a grain of sand

riders' silhouettes

what a beautiful sunny day. We walked down to the gloriously named Stocky Bottom, and saw these riders on the way. The river Evenlode flows through said bottom, and we saw a spaniel enjoying splashing about. His owners said they knew the river level was low as the dog was walking rather than swimming as he usually has to there.

I always think that Evenlode and Windrush sound like river names from The Hobbit, but then Tolkien was at Oxford so I suppose he'd have heard them there. He also taught at Leeds and I would love to know if he ever went to Malham as the description of the "doorstep" on the Misty Mountain reminds me of it.
