Focussed or keeping an eye on the bigger picture?

My natural behaviour is to just look through the lens at the expense of all else. Is that the best way? Do I need to keep an eye on everything else that's going on in case I miss something?

Tenuous analogy aside - I am interested in your eye/shooting preferences....
