Lord Palmerston's Folly

It is not just today's British Government who mess things up, in 1860 the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom decided that there was an immediate threat from the French Navy (like the weapons of mass destruction no doubt!)

Lord Palmerston (as PM) commissioned the defenses to be enhanced. the problem was that by the time they had been built the threat had gone!

Anyway here is what is left of Fort Redoubt, you can see the moat to the right and the various tunnels into the cliff.
