Ask a gardener to name a common alpine and the most popular answer might be 'aubrieta' or 'alyssum', both widely grown and with real flower power.

Yesterday I blipped a delicious primula, today its a shining saxifrage. Both of these genera contain many great garden plants and they are far more varied than the two 'A's above!

Saxifraga x elisabethae makes a hard cushion of spiky foliage and like many alpine plants, produces flowers that are huge in relation to the tiny leaves. There is something about these tiny gems that I find irresistible :-)
